Atherosclerotic Peripheral Vascular Disease Symposium II: stroke intervention: state of the art.

چکیده
Stroke is the third leading cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States.1 From a global perspective, stroke is also a leading cause of death and disability. The past 20 years have seen significant improvements in stroke prevention, yet each year, 700 000 people have a new or recurrent stroke.2,3 The medical and societal costs of stroke exceed $62 billion in the United States alone.4 Any intervention that could reverse or limit the effects of a stroke would have dramatic medical, societal, and public health benefits. This section will focus on treatment of acute ischemic stroke, which accounts for 80% to 85% of all strokes. Other recent publications have focused on therapies for intracerebral hemorrhage. Acute interventions to reduce the effects of an ischemic stroke can be organized into several main approaches: (1) reperfusion strategies (lytics, endovascular/ mechanical); (2) neuroprotection; and (3) restoration, regeneration, and rehabilitation.

Percutaneous intervention for peripheral artery disease has evolved from balloon angioplasty for simple focal lesions to multimodality techniques that enable treatment of severe arterial insufficiency. This technological expansion comes without a standard approach or algorithm, which makes the decision-making process more subjective than objective. Nevertheless, clinical tools are available tha...

The primary goal of this American Heart Association renal intervention writing group was to discuss current controversies related to renal interventions and to recommend important areas of clinical research and advocacy initiatives in this peripheral arterial bed. The 4 areas covered in this section include (1) management of asymptomatic renal artery disease, (2) treatment of ischemic nephropat...
متن کاملAtherosclerotic Peripheral Vascular Disease Symposium II: screening for atherosclerotic vascular diseases: should nationwide programs be instituted?
It has been proposed that vascular screening programs should be widely established to provide earlier detection of peripheral artery disease, carotid artery disease, renal artery disease, and abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) to diminish the societal burden of these illnesses. Early detection of these conditions could lead to treatments that offer the potential to reduce the incidence of fatal ...
متن کاملEarly Experience of Endovascular Treatment of Peripheral Vascular Disease.
BACKGROUND Atherosclerotic peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is prevalent affecting up to 16% of the population aged 55 years or older. Endovascular intervention for the treatment of limb ischemia has become the first line therapy but in Pakistan it is in embryonic stage due to dearth of trained persons and dedicated centres. This study was conducted to evaluate procedural success and early out...
